Oral Pathology

Close-up of doctors examining skull x-rayOral pathology refers to diseases of the mouth, jaws, tongue, lips, and related structures. This includes benign lesions like cysts or abnormal growths, cancerous lesions, and autoimmune diseases.

Our goal is to diagnose the oral disease before it becomes a big issue later on down the road. Oftentimes, we will perform a biopsy to determine the cause of the disease process.

Most oral diseases are treatable and not life-threatening. In fact, removing a lesion and performing a biopsy is oftentimes curative.

In the case of oral cancer, the survival rate is about 80% for those who are diagnosed in the early stages. Since the prognosis is much worse when oral cancers are discovered in late stages, it is vitally important to diagnose cancers early. For this reason, when there are concerning changes in tissues in the mouth, we will oftentimes recommend a biopsy to determine if the changes are due to cancer.
