Why do you need a Maxillofacial Surgeon?

Posted on 11/22/2021 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
Why do you need a Maxillofacial Surgeon?A maxillofacial surgeon will help you with oral issues that are related to the jaw and the face. Many people do not know why a general dentist will not help rectify such issues that are related to the face and the jaw. A dentist will always refer you to a maxillofacial surgeon if they establish that your condition needs to have surgery either of the jaw or the face.

What does a Maxillofacial Surgeon treat?

The maxillofacial surgeon will treat conditions such as temporomandibular joints and the disorders associated with the joints. The maxillofacial surgeon has advanced knowledge on conditions affecting not only the jaws and teeth but also the soft tissues and bones of the face. While performing the procedure a maxillofacial surgeon administers anesthesia. All the maxillofacial surgeons are surgeons but not all oral surgeons are maxillofacial surgeons. The oral maxillofacial surgeons have advanced medical expertise and training and they have certification to perform more procedures on the face. The oral surgeons are confined to the treatment of conditions that are affecting or within a patient's mouth. Oral surgeons will deal with root canals, impacted teeth, crowns, and fittings. The maxillofacial surgeon will deal with cases such as cleft lip or palates, abnormality of biting, difficult tooth extraction, chronic pain of the face, and bone–fused dental implants.

When to see a Maxillofacial Surgeon

There are no limitations to what types of surgery a maxillofacial surgeon will do. If your condition exceeds the mouth then what you need is a maxillofacial surgeon. This includes conditions like abnormalities of the nasal cavity and this is done by the maxillofacial surgeon. If you have some kind of trauma to the face, then this is the kind of surgeon you need. Another reason why you might need to see the maxillofacial surgeon is when you have developed abnormal growth in areas around the mouth, neck, or even the head.

Visit us to see our maxillofacial surgeon who will determine if the kind of growths you have are cancerous or not and for treatment related to the face.
